Plate tectonics

Sometime in the past, there was one giant landmass called Pangaea (all land), that was surrounded by one giant ocean called Panthalassa. About 200 million years ago, Pangaea broke up into smaller continents and these continents have since "drifted" to their present positions.

Natural Hazards

Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, storm surge, tsunamis, volcanic activity, volcanic eruption prediction, ... You name it.

If you want to know what's happening on our planet

then you will find out here.

Hurricanes
hurricane

A single storm can wreak havoc on coastal and inland communities over thousands of square miles. In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma demonstrated the devastation that hurricanes can inflict and the importance of hurricane hazards research and preparedness.

The USGS not only studies hurricanes but in association with the US National Hurricane Center predicts their course, wind speed, storm surge and destructive power.

Volcanoes
Hawaiian Volcano

Earth is a dynamic planet, volcanic eruptions are awe-inspiring displays of the powerful forces of nature and can be extraordinarily destructive. On average, about 60 of Earth's 550 historically active volcanoes are in eruption each year.

Monitoring many of the worlds volcanoes the USGS offers life saving early warnings of imminent eruptions.

Yellowstone National Park... Is it an imminent super volcano?

Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, a partnership between the USGS, Yellowstone National Park, and the University of Utah, closely monitors volcanic activity at Yellowstone. They say that there is no evidence that a catastrophic eruption at Yellowstone is imminent, and such events are unlikely to occur in the next few centuries. Scientists have also found no indication of an imminent smaller eruption of lava.

Earthquakes

Impossible to predict with any degree of accuracy, earthquakes have killed millions over the centuries. The USGS is committed to researching this deadly act of nature in its efforts to protect mankind.
