The Author: |
Roger Hydes was born in Burton-on-Trent, England, in January 1952 – the youngest of three brothers. He lost both his parents in his late teens and, at a loss as to what to do in life, joined the British Army as a trainee motor mechanic. Nine years later, married, and now with two young siblings of his own, he decided it was time to provide a more stable family life for his wife, his son, and his daughter.
Settling down near Luton in Bedfordshire, close to where he had met his future wife, he progressed in his chosen trade to become a Master Technician in the motor industry. Always though, his fascination for almost anything to do with the universe played on his mind. Eventually, many years later, he decided to write his first novel based on an idea that had filled his mind for a very long time.
The Heritage Files are the result... I hope you enjoy the story. |

The Heritage Files: |
It seems odd to me now, but The Heritage Files was never conceived with the intention of writing a book… it was simply a means of getting to sleep.
Being a ‘night owl’ I have always had a problem in actually drifting off to sleep, often lying in bed for more than an hour before sleep came. Then, about seven years ago, I discovered ‘Planet Roger’, it is a place that I visited every night in my quest for sleep… a place that only I could visit, a place where I could relax and unleash my imagination.
This was where The Heritage Files was born, where it took shape and developed over the years until one day, alone and bored in the house, and sitting in front of a computer screen playing some game that I had played hundreds of times before, a thought sprang to mind. ‘Could I write a book?’ I wondered, ‘Based on my by now nightly thoughts.’
Well, there really was only one way to find out wasn’t there? So, I turned off the game and started to write… and fell in love with the challenge, and the experience of transforming what was a private dream into a story that I hope you will all enjoy.
It’s funny, but when I went to bed that night I drifted off to sleep without the slightest problem, and ever since that day I have never had a problem in getting to sleep.
I still visit ‘Planet Roger’, but in my dreams now, and when I’m writing… not as a means to achieve sleep.
Anyway, seven years to conceive the storyline, another fifteen months to write the first novel. Going over it countless times during those fifteen months to get it right, and to learn the art of telling a story. Learning how to portray feelings and emotions, learning how, and when to describe things. Learning too how to keep the reader interested, to surprise, to amuse, and to tempt the reader into wanting to read more.
I hope that I have achieved all of that, I certainly tried my best.
In the end though, only you can be the judge… I merely did what I believed in.

The Web Site |
Originally designed as no more than a way to publicise the four novels that make up The Heritage Files, my experience in creating Origin and in preparing this first novel for publication has led me to re-assess its purpose and its goals.
Writing a novel is not easy, it can be a lonely existance sitting in front of a computer screen with idea's and scenarioes churning through your mind as you try to work out the plots, sub-plots, and diologue. At times you almost become one of your characters as you attempt to figure out how they would react to different situations, only to be brought back into reality by a cry of 'It's one o'clock in the morning, you'll never get up when I call you!' from your partner that shatters your concentration.
Then there is the research that must be done to ensure that your story holds water. The editing, the proof-reading, the spell-checking (computer spell-checkers don't pick up everything you know!) Checking your grammer, dealing with your publisher, and finally getting some publicity for your baby... your story will remain on the bookstore shelves if no-one knows it's there. All authors want people to read their stories, and for many reasons, for me though the simple sense of satisfaction in the knowledge that you have given a few hours of pleasure and escapeism to your readers has to take priority.
Sorry, I rambled on a bit there, back to the web site.
Since the web site exists, I have decided to use it to benefit any other author who wishes to publicise their work. I will give them a full page on the site to publicise their book. No catches, and completely free of charge. All I ask is that if they have their own web site they provide a link to mine... the more visitors to these pages the better for everyone, it means more sales of your books.
I have also decided to provide links to research sites that I use to assist other authors, and to offer free advice to any questions they may have. |
