As it starts, Origin reminds me of a mixture of Battlestar Galactica and The Last Starfighter. There’s a little bit of a fantasy wish-fulfilment aspect as the book explores what it would it be like to be a middle middle-aged man who discovers he has a vast starship to control. However, author Roger Hydes infuses the opening elements with enough good science and handles the developing relationship between Cassandra and Barnes subtly and realistically enough that it keeps the story moving along and interesting. Ultimately the story develops into a solid military space opera that reminds me favourably of the novel, Starship Troopers.
Origin was a satisfying and entertaining read. It included enough social commentary to give the book depth without bogging it down. Originis the first book of “The Heritage Files” series. I’m looking forward to Hydes’ second book, Interim, to see how he resolves the hopeful cliff-hanger of the first book.
